Road Stations (道の駅) has been transformed into a unique and interesting space not only as a resting place for long-distance driving but also by handling local specialties and operating stores. What is a Road Station (Michinoeki/道の駅)?
Road Station was proposed at a symposium in Chugoku region in 1990 with the goal of providing a safe and comfortable road traffic environment for road users and contributing to regional development. Three years later, in 1993, 103 Road Stations were registered. The number is increasing year by year.
According to data from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism, there are 952 road stations registered in 2010. Many of them are now turning into important tourist spots that convey the attractions of Japan.

Road Station Utsukusihara Kogen (道の駅 美ヶ原高原) is located at the southern end of Ueda City. This Road Station has an observation terrace where you can enjoy the vast scenery of eastern Nagano Prefecture. There are restaurants and shops, selling Shinshu specialties, soft-serve ice cream, and souvenirs limited to Road Stations. It is a place where you can enjoy all day long by hiking and enjoying the adjacent museum. However, it should be noted that public transportation is not connected and it will be closed in winter.
