Tsumago-juku post town in nagano

Tsumago-juku post town (妻籠宿) is located in Nagiso town in Nagano. During the Edo period,  traveler, merchant, administrator used transport Edo (now Tokyo) with Kyoto. We can look a state of remaining Japanese traditional townscape and feel a historical atmosphere.

Tsumago juku Ryokan, Accommodation

There are many historical and traditional accomodation in Tsumago juku. But Visitor need to be careful some points to enjoy accomodation!

There is no hot springs (Onsen) in Tsumago.

All shops and restaurant are closed until 5 p,m.

The stores in Tsumago do not accept credit cards, so please be sure to have sufficient cash before you arrive.

Tsumago juku Honjin

Honjin is accommodation that celebrated personage and the shogunate government stayed in Edo era (1603 ~ 1868). A visitor can have a look around the Japanese traditional architecture.

What is Masugata?

Masugata (桝形) is a shape of road that is a double turn. Why was the road made this shape? The answer is prevention from invasion or attack by an enemy. Enemy felt difficult to invasion or attack because the couldn’t go straight by horse.

Near post towns

There are about 10 post towns nearby Tsumago-juku post town. Famous near post town is Narai-juku (奈良井宿). On the other hands, post towns have each feature points. For example, visitor can see the northern Alps from Nojiri-juku post town (野尻宿).
